Hello and welcome to episode 4 of The Ask Sri Vishwanath Show. Today I want to talk about sin and guilt.

Today’s question comes from Scott. Scott asks “is making love to your partner a sin? I am easily attracted to pleasure but later I feel guilty and I need to overcome it but I’m powerless”

That’s a great question. I love that the questions are pouring in. This can really help us get closer to the truth and rid us of any frustration.

What is sin?

The word sin gets thrown around a lot but what is sin? What does it really mean? The best definition of the word sin comes from the Vedanta. It says thinking about sin is the greatest sin. So basically sin is an illusion. Krishna says that sin is a lower awareness and anything that is a lower awareness does not exist. They are manufactured in the fabric of the mind.

Ignorance

Krishna also defines sin as ignorance. Vivekananda says that thinking about it is the greatest sin as it just produces more sin. You’ll end up going around in circles and wasting your time. Remember, any action that brings you closer to your consciousness is called dharma. Anything which takes you away from your consciousness is called adharma, otherwise known as sin.

All these rituals, people are focusing on them because they are caught up in their body mind and intellect instead of focusing on their consciousness. They are only interested in definitions and fabrications of the mind. They think this is better but they have no clue. They should be talking about moving closer to their consciousness.

The light

You could spend days, weeks or even years talking about darkness but the more you talk about darkness the more it spreads. All that is needed is to turn on the light. As you just need to become more aware of the light.

So remember all this is categorized as ignorance so don’t waste your time on it.

Think of this example. Let’s say someone in your family is ill and you start cracking jokes about it. This would be such a low thing to do. Think of sin in the same way. It’s a lower awareness. You would focus on wanting that person to be healthy.

The same applies to the rest of the world. People have no urgency to get in touch with their consciousness. They are too concerned about darkness and sin.

Think of the radio. You turn it on and tune it in until you hear some music. What happens if you don’t like the song? Do you keep listening to it? No. You would change the frequency.  You must do the same with your consciousness.

If you stay on the same wavelength you will get caught up in the body, mind and intellect. These are the 3 things that give off those signals of attraction. All you need to do is change the frequency. Do this and you will find yourself getting closer to the light.

Meditation

So how do we do this? Start with 5 minutes of prayer or meditation in the morning. Don’t worry about sin, pleasure or guilt. Don’t give it any importance. Forget about it and it will fade away. Give more importance to spirituality and your consciousness. Give more importance to Krishna, Christ, Buddha or any other higher power of your choosing. Give important to their frequencies and not the lower awareness.

If you get into this mode of guilt and sin just keep telling yourself that it is ignorance. It doesn’t exist so don’t waste time thinking about it. Spend your time on your consciousness. Do this, then sin and guilt won’t bother you anymore. You won’t even give them a second thought. As you move closer to light – darkness fades.

I want you do something. Every morning take some time to meditate on this verse: “Him the weapons cannot cut, fire cannot burn, water cannot wet, wind cannot dry. The self cannot be cut, dried, burned or wetted…Eternal, all pervasive, stable, immovable, everlasting the self-Reigns”

Draw your mind inwards and say it again: “Him the weapons cannot cut, fire cannot burn, water cannot wet, wind cannot dry. The self cannot be cut, dried, burned or wetted…Eternal, all pervasive, stable, immovable, everlasting the self-Reigns”

Manufacture that self within you. It is there inside you. Make space in your heart for your consciousness. Right now it’s shrouded with these thoughts of guilt and sin. Just let it go and you’ll be so happy.

I want to leave you with a poem which was translated by Vivekananda:

I am untouched by the senses

I am beyond all time space and form

I am the basis of the universe

I am in everything, everywhere I am

I am existence, absolute knowledge

I am he

I am he.

I hope I answered your question. Remember you keep asking question and I’ll keep answering them.
